Monica Gray
Monica Gray, the head winemaker at See Saw Wine since October 2021, is celebrated as one of Australia's leading female winemakers. She brings a wealth of experience, having worked across prominent wine regions such as Orange, Canberra, and Mudgee, and completed vintages in Germany and France. Monica holds a Bachelor of Wine Science from Charles Sturt University and actively contributes to the industry as a board member of The Australian Society of Viticulture and Oenology and the Orange Regional Viticulture Association. Her winemaking philosophy focuses on minimal intervention, allowing the premium organic fruit to express its true character. Monica's favorite varietal to craft and enjoy is Chardonnay, a testament to her affinity for the nuanced expression of cool-climate wines.
The Orange wine region, located in New South Wales, Australia, is distinguished by its high-altitude vineyards and cool-climate conditions, making it ideal for producing premium wines. Situated on the slopes of Mount Canobolas, an ancient extinct volcano, the region's vineyards are planted at elevations ranging from 600 to over 1,000 meters above sea level. This altitude provides a unique diurnal temperature variation, with warm days and cool nights, allowing grapes to develop complex flavors while retaining natural acidity. The volcanic soils contribute to the distinctive minerality found in the wines. Orange is renowned for its diverse varietal expressions, including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Shiraz, each reflecting the region's terroir. The area's commitment to sustainable and organic viticulture practices has further solidified its reputation as a leading wine-producing region in Australia.
