Haydn Mouat
A New Zealand native, serves as the head winemaker at Canoe Ridge Vineyard. His winemaking journey began with a harvest at Gibbston Valley in Central Otago, leading him to earn a degree in enology from Lincoln University. Haydn gained diverse experience through harvests in British Columbia and California's Russian River Valley. In 2002, he joined Seven Hills Winery in Walla Walla, progressing to associate winemaker over nine years. After a tenure at Waterbrook Winery and further experience in California, Haydn returned to Walla Walla in 2018 to lead Canoe Ridge Vineyard. He focuses on crafting fruit-driven wines that authentically express the vineyard's terroir, emphasizing meticulous cellar management to preserve the integrity of each vintage.
The Horse Heaven Hills AVA, established in 2005, is a prominent wine-growing region in southeastern Washington State, bordered by the Yakima Valley to the north and the Columbia River to the south. This area is renowned for its unique combination of climatic and geological conditions favorable for viticulture. The south-facing slopes benefit from consistent sunshine, while the Columbia River moderates temperatures, reducing frost risks and extending the growing season. Steady winds from the river decrease disease pressure and encourage the development of grape skins, contributing to the structure and complexity of the wines. The soils are predominantly sandy and well-draining, formed from ancient lava flows and glacial floods, allowing vines to establish deep root systems. These factors collectively create an environment conducive to producing high-quality grapes, particularly Bordeaux varietals like Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Wines from Horse Heaven Hills are characterized by their elegance, balance, and depth of flavor, reflecting the distinctive terroir of the region.
