Herdade do Muchao

Bottle of Signatured Mouchao Wine

Herdade do Mouchão is a historic, family-run winery located in Portugal's Alentejo region. Established in the late 19th century by Thomas Reynolds, who initially migrated to the area for the cork business, the estate has since become renowned for its exceptional wines, olive oil, honey, and pomace brandy. The winery spans 38 hectares, comprising several vineyards situated in different areas of the estate. The earliest plantings are located on the flat, low-lying ground near the winery (adega), particularly suited to the Alicante Bouschet grape—a variety that has become synonymous with Mouchão's rich, full-bodied red wines.Mouchão remains committed to traditional winemaking methods. Grapes are handpicked and foot-trodden in open stone lagares, and fermentation occurs naturally without temperature control. The wines are then aged in large wooden vats and bottled on-site, ensuring meticulous quality control. This dedication to heritage techniques results in wines that truly express the unique terroir of the Alentejo region.
